Describe the fixture and what you observed
Tell the company which fixture, supply pipe or water heater is involved, when the problem began and whether water is still escaping. Share a model number or photo only if already accessible. Ask whether the first visit diagnoses the problem, completes an agreed repair, or produces a replacement estimate.
- Fixture or equipment and symptoms
- Accessible model and previous invoice
- Whether supply is already isolated
- Address, access and attendance window
Separate the plumbing work from surrounding repairs
Ask who opens and reinstates walls, cabinets, flooring or landscaping if access is needed. Have the proposal identify the actual pipe, fixture or equipment being changed, compatible parts, cleanup and disposal. A plumbing repair and water-damage drying or rebuilding are separate scopes unless the agreement specifically includes both.
Compare like-for-like estimates
Ask how the diagnostic or attendance charge works, whether it is credited toward approved work, and who authorizes extra labor or parts. For replacement equipment, compare the model, installation scope and warranty separately from the purchase price. Confirm applicable licensing and permit responsibilities with the relevant local authority.
Request a useful completion record
Ask for an invoice identifying the repaired component or installed product and any follow-up needed. Clarify the contractor workmanship warranty and manufacturer product warranty, including their exclusions. EPA WaterSense describes several different household leak sources; a description over the phone does not replace the plumber’s diagnosis at your property.
