Painting estimates: compare preparation, surfaces and finishes

Questions about paint preparation, repairs, products, cabinets, lead-safe requirements and written workmanship terms.

Identify the surfaces and intended finish

Describe interior or exterior walls, ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets or other surfaces separately. State whether you want painting, staining or a specialty finish and identify known peeling or damage. Ask whether the proposal covers the same rooms, surfaces and components before comparing the total price with another estimate.

  • Interior or exterior surfaces
  • Paint, stain or specialty finish
  • Known damage and existing coatings
  • Occupied rooms and access timing

Ask what happens before the finish coats

Have cleaning, scraping, sanding, caulking, patching, priming and any replacement work itemized where relevant. Ask what happens if damaged material is uncovered. Distinguish cosmetic preparation from structural, moisture-source or specialist remediation work. For cabinets, agree the doors, frames, interiors and hardware included, along with handling and reassembly.

Confirm products and applicable specialist requirements

Ask for the specified coating, sheen, finish plan and protection of nearby surfaces. For work that may disturb lead-based paint, ask which requirements apply and verify relevant firm credentials with EPA or the authorized state or Tribal program. Lead-safe certification is distinct from a general contractor license and from independent directory verification.

Agree the sequence and written warranty

Confirm drying and curing access, occupied rooms, weather postponements and cleanup. Ask whether product supply, paint quantities and additional preparation are included in the estimate. Obtain workmanship and product warranty terms separately, including surfaces and conditions excluded. Retain the agreed colors, specifications and approved changes for future touch-ups or warranty questions.
