Booking a handyman: turn a task list into a clear scope

Compare individual repair and installation tasks, materials, visit charges, trade boundaries and completion expectations.

Write down the individual tasks

List the repairs or installations you want, their locations and the preferred order. Add photographs and measurements already available. A request to repair a door, hang a shelf and patch a wall should name each task rather than rely on a broad maintenance label. Ask which items the company actually accepts.

  • Each task and its location
  • Existing materials and dimensions
  • Who supplies replacement items
  • Priority order and access window

Check which tasks need a different trade

Ask who will perform each part of the work and whether any licensed or otherwise authorized trade is required locally. Confirm requirements with the responsible authority when relevant. A handyman listing does not establish permission to perform all electrical, plumbing, structural or other regulated work, nor does it verify the person’s credentials.

Compare time, materials and minimum charges

Ask whether the visit is priced by agreed task, by time, or with a minimum charge. Identify who supplies hardware, replacement components and consumables, and whether shopping or travel time is charged. Agree how the contractor reports an unexpected defect and obtains your approval before adding tasks or replacing materials.

Define completion for each item

Specify alignment, fastening, finish touch-ups, packaging removal and cleanup where they are part of the job. Ask how an unfinished task or return visit is charged and what workmanship promise applies. Keep the itemized scope, approved changes and invoice. An agreed task list makes comparison and a later follow-up more useful.
