Flooring proposals: compare materials, preparation and installation

Questions about the substrate, moisture assessment, removal, transitions, fitting, access and separate product warranties.

Start with the floor and the rooms

Identify the rooms, existing floor and intended material: carpet, tile, hardwood, vinyl or another specified system. Ask whether the company installs or repairs that particular material. Provide measurements for initial discussion, but confirm who verifies quantities. A wood-floor quote should identify the actual product rather than rely on a generic flooring label.

  • Rooms and present flooring
  • Specific proposed material
  • Known substrate or moisture issues
  • Furniture, transitions and access

Agree what happens beneath the new floor

Ask how existing flooring is removed, how the substrate is assessed and which leveling, moisture checks or repairs are included. Request a written process for pricing concealed damage before work proceeds. Confirm whether any older or unknown materials need specialist assessment rather than assuming removal is included in a standard installation.

Compare the finished installation scope

Have proposals identify product, quantity, installation method, underlay where applicable, transitions, edges and trim. Ask who moves furniture, handles doors or appliances and removes waste. Agree room access and the sequence while the work is underway. Delivery, unused material and return costs should be discussed before the order is committed.

Keep product and workmanship responsibilities separate

Ask which contractor workmanship terms apply and which product warranty is supplied by the manufacturer. Request the relevant care and use instructions, including any conditions before furniture or normal use returns. Keep product identification, installation records, approved changes and the final invoice so a later issue can be directed appropriately.
