Property locksmith service: confirm the business, access authority and quote

Describe the lock request, verify the attending business, and compare rekeying, replacement and commercial hardware proposals.

Specify the opening and the result you want

Explain whether the request is for a home or business and whether you need access, an assessment of a damaged lock, rekeying or replacement. Describe only what is already visible, such as the lock brand or an electronic keypad. Confirm that the company accepts that kind of property work; a vehicle, safe or access-control system needs its own scope confirmation.

Mention whether the property is rented or managed and who can authorize the work. Ask in advance what identification or permission the attending business will require. This guide does not explain entry or bypass methods. Confirm the actual mobile or office appointment and the address served rather than assuming a telephone contact number guarantees attendance.

  • Property type and the opening or hardware involved
  • Requested outcome: access, repair, rekeying or replacement
  • Existing key availability, without attempting further tests
  • Tenant, owner or manager authorization arrangements

Confirm who will attend and invoice the job

Ask for the business name, contact details and who will attend. If another company will provide the work, ask whose estimate, insurance and warranty terms apply. Compare that information with the attending technician’s identification and invoice, and ask about discrepancies before authorizing work. Do not assume every booking channel and attending business are the same entity.

Check applicable requirements with the authority in the job’s jurisdiction. As one state-specific example, California BSIS distinguishes a locksmith company license from employee registration. That program does not establish requirements elsewhere or prove that a particular business holds a credential. The cited BSIS FAQ is a California reference, not a national approval or a price threshold.

Agree what the quoted figure includes

Ask for a written quote identifying the service call, labor and any proposed hardware or keys. Is the figure a total for the described work or an initial assessment charge? What might change after attendance, and how will a revised price be approved? Ask what is payable if the company cannot undertake the requested work or you decline it.

For rekeying, ask which locks or cylinders and how many keys are included. For replacement, ask which hardware is proposed and whether door, frame, closer or alignment work is part of the same scope. For a business, identify any master-key or access-control requirement separately. Request written differences between options rather than assuming one quote covers all of them.

Keep an itemized record and clarify the terms

Request an invoice showing the attending business, work performed, hardware fitted, keys supplied and credential details where applicable. Ask for warranty and return-visit terms if offered. Keep those records with the approved quote and changes so a later property manager or service company can understand the work without guessing.

For any proposed contract, ask which federal and state consumer protections and cancellation exceptions apply. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule does not cover every transaction, including certain emergency and requested repair situations. A quoted amount, a credential claim or a signed authorization does not by itself settle every legal question; ask the appropriate local consumer agency about uncertain terms.
