Explain the blockage without diagnosing it
List the fixtures affected, whether the problem recurs and any earlier drain or sewer work. Ask the company whether it handles an individual fixture drain, the property’s sewer lateral, or a different system. Describe what you observed; do not assume a slow drain proves a collapsed pipe or roots.
- Affected fixtures and recurrence
- Earlier cleaning or camera reports
- Known cleanout and access locations
- Utility or shared-line information
Specify what the visit will produce
Ask whether the price covers clearing a blockage, a camera inspection, locating the line, or an actual repair. If a camera survey is proposed, request the findings and available recording. Ask the technician to explain the identified problem before approving excavation, lining, replacement or another substantially different scope.
Confirm ownership, access and reinstatement
Ask your utility or local authority where responsibility for the affected line changes; boundaries vary. Confirm permission to enter shared or neighboring property and who arranges permits where needed. Have paving, soil, planting and interior reinstatement listed explicitly. A pipe repair does not automatically include water-damage cleanup.
Agree repeat-visit and repair terms
Compare callout, equipment, inspection and repair charges separately. Ask what happens if the blockage cannot be cleared, a return visit is needed, or the condition changes after opening the line. Get any warranty and exclusions in writing. Keep the report, scope changes and final invoice for future service decisions.
